Many people have problems dealing with heat waves, whether they are at home, out and about, at work, or on holiday. Worrying about getting hot and sweaty can make it worse and ruin the day. Here are a few ideas to deal with it, at home, at work, on holiday or just out and about

At Home

  • Do the housework, shopping or the gardening first thing in the morning when it’s not too hot
  • Go out and buy an oscillating fan, place it next to an open window and sit by it
  • Open the windows but close the curtains or shutters particularly in south facing rooms
  • Eat lots of salad instead of slaving away over a hot stove.

Out and About

  • Walk in the shade particularly in the woods where the trees generate a refreshing cold breeze
  • Cycling also cools people down, especially going down hill
  • When travelling by public transport use the train - they are cooler than buses which tend to get very hot
  • When buying a car, choose one in a lighter colour and try and park it in the shade

At Work

  • If possible find a job in a modern air conditioned building in a small office - the more people there are and the more computers there are, the hotter it gets
  • When colleagues are on holiday share the extra workload so that people are not stressed out at the busiest and hottest time of the year
  • Arrange any appointments and meetings for the mornings when people are fresher
  • During your lunch hour use the time to relax instead of rushing about getting hot

On Holiday

  • Go sightseeing in the morning and bear in mind tourist attractions will be quieter on weekday mornings not in the afternoons and at weekends
  • Choose a destination near the sea, a river, a lake or in the mountains where it’s cooler
  • Avoid sunbathing at the hottest time of day - usually mid day to 4 pm
  • When abroad do what the locals do and have a siesta

In General

  • Wear a sunhat, sunglasses and white cotton colours which reflect the heat
  • Practice meditation and breathing exercises which help reduce stress and increase feelings of relaxation
  • Learn creative visualisation and imagine walking in the snow or standing under a cold shower
  • Drink lots of cold water and squash with ice cubes in it

And Finally

For those people who really cannot take hot temperatures, remember the heat wave will not last forever and Autumn will soon be on the way and then everyone will be talking about Christmas instead.
